Inside every tooth is a soft chamber called the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When bacteria reach this chamber through a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental work, the pulp becomes infected and inflamed.
Left untreated, that infection spreads to the surrounding bone and can result in a painful abscess. A root canal cleans out the infected pulp, disinfects the canal system, and seals it permanently.

What Are the Signs You May Need a Root Canal?
Persistent Toothache
Deep, throbbing pain that lingers or keeps coming back, especially when biting or applying pressure, is a primary indicator that the pulp is inflamed or infected.
Sensitivity to Hot or Cold
When sensitivity lingers long after the hot or cold source is removed (more than a few seconds), it can signal that the nerve tissue inside the tooth is damaged.
Cracked or Chipped Tooth
A crack that runs deep into the tooth can expose the pulp to bacteria. Even without obvious pain, a cracked tooth should be evaluated promptly to prevent infection from spreading.
Swollen or Tender Gums

What Happens During a Root Canal?
Exam and X-Rays
We begin with digital X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and the shape of the root canals. This tells us exactly what we are working with before we begin any treatment. We review the images with you and answer every question you have.
Local Anesthesia
We apply a topical numbing gel first, then administer local anesthesia to the area around the tooth. We always wait until the area is completely numb before proceeding. If you feel anything during the procedure, just let us know and we will add more anesthetic.
Pulp Removal and Canal Cleaning
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth. Using precise, fine instruments, we remove the infected pulp tissue, then carefully shape and clean each canal. The canals are flushed with an antibacterial solution to eliminate any remaining bacteria.
Sealing the Canals
Once the canals are clean and dry, we fill them with a biocompatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha and seal the opening with a temporary or permanent filling. This prevents bacteria from re-entering the canal system.
Crown Placement (Follow-Up Visit)
Most teeth that have had a root canal are restored with a dental crown to protect the tooth and restore full biting strength. This is typically completed at a follow-up appointment. We will coordinate the crown design to match your natural teeth in color and shape.
