Sedation Dentistry Explained

What Is Twilight Sedation?

Twilight sedation is an IV-administered form of conscious sedation that puts you in a deeply relaxed, anxiety-free state while you continue breathing on your own. Most patients have little to no memory of their procedure afterward, making it ideal for anyone who experiences significant dental fear or discomfort.

Unlike general anesthesia, you are not fully unconscious during twilight sedation. You can still respond to simple instructions from Dr. Saadat, but you won't feel anxiety or pain — and you almost certainly won't remember the experience. It is often described as "blinking and having it be over."

At Toluca Advanced Dentistry, twilight sedation is administered exclusively by Dr. Nariman Saadat, a licensed oral surgeon. It is currently available only for oral surgery procedures such as extractions, wisdom tooth removal, implant placement, and bone grafting.

Not sure if sedation is available for your specific procedure? We get that question a lot. Please call or text us at (818) 766-3775 and we'll give you a straight answer.

The Sedation Experience

How Does IV Sedation Work?

IV twilight sedation is delivered through a small catheter, typically placed in your arm or hand, and takes effect within minutes. The level of sedation is carefully monitored and adjusted throughout your entire procedure by Dr. Nariman Saadat.
Step 01
Consultation & Medical Review

Before your procedure, our team reviews your health history to confirm you are a good candidate for IV sedation. We'll walk you through pre-op instructions — including fasting requirements — and answer every question you have.

Step 02
IV Line Placed by Dr. Saadat

A small IV catheter is gently placed, usually in your hand or forearm. The sedative medication is administered, and within a few minutes you will feel deeply relaxed. Most patients begin to feel calm almost immediately.

Step 03
Your Procedure — While You Rest

Local anesthetic ensures you feel no pain, while the sedation eliminates awareness and anxiety. Dr. Saadat monitors your vitals throughout. For many patients, the procedure feels like it lasted only seconds.

Step 04
Recovery & Safe Discharge

Once your procedure is complete, you'll rest comfortably as the sedation wears off. A responsible adult must be present to drive you home. Most patients feel alert enough to leave within 30 to 60 minutes, though grogginess can last for the rest of the day.

Step 05
Post-Op Care & Follow-Up

Our team provides detailed aftercare instructions before you leave. We'll check in with you after your appointment to make sure your recovery is smooth. Rest for 24 hours and avoid driving or major decisions during that time.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Who Is a Good Candidate for Twilight Sedation?

Twilight sedation is an excellent option for patients who feel significant anxiety about dental procedures, have a strong gag reflex, or need complex oral surgery completed comfortably. If past experiences have made it difficult to sit through dental treatment, sedation can make the difference between avoiding necessary care and finally getting it done.
Dental anxiety icon
Dental Anxiety or Phobia

You feel genuine fear at the thought of dental treatment — not just mild nerves. Twilight sedation eliminates that anxious response entirely so you can receive the care your oral health needs.

Past Traumatic Experiences

A difficult experience in the past can make it hard to return to the dentist. Sedation gives your nervous system a reset — a way to get through necessary treatment without reliving old fears.

Complex Oral Surgery

Procedures like multiple extractions, wisdom tooth removal, or implant placement with bone grafting are often long. Sedation keeps you comfortable throughout, no matter how much time is required.

A strong gag reflex can make even routine dental work feel overwhelming. IV sedation relaxes the body's reflexive responses, allowing Dr. Saadat to work efficiently and comfortably.

Your Sedation Questions, Answered

We know sedation raises a lot of questions — and we want you to feel completely informed before your appointment. If you don't see your question below, please call or text us at (818) 766-3775 and we'll walk you through it personally.
Twilight sedation (also called IV conscious sedation) is a medically administered state of deep relaxation. You remain conscious and able to breathe on your own, but you are largely unaware of what's happening and will have little to no memory of the procedure. At Toluca Advanced Dentistry, it is available exclusively for oral surgery procedures and is administered by Dr. Nariman Saadat, a licensed oral surgeon.
No. Twilight sedation is not general anesthesia. You remain in a conscious but deeply relaxed state and continue breathing independently. The difference is significant: general anesthesia requires intubation and a dedicated anesthesiologist in a hospital-like setting, while IV twilight sedation can be safely administered in our office by Dr. Saadat. Most patients have no memory of their procedure, but they were never truly unconscious.
Twilight sedation at Toluca Advanced Dentistry is currently offered exclusively through our Oral Surgery services. Eligible procedures include:
  • Tooth extractions
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Dental implant placement
  • Bone grafting
  • Multiple procedures completed in a single visit

All IV twilight sedation at Toluca Advanced Dentistry is administered by Dr. Nariman Saadat, a licensed oral surgeon. Your safety is paramount, which is why sedation is never performed by general dentistry staff — only by a credentialed oral surgery specialist. Dr. Saadat monitors your vitals continuously throughout the procedure.
No. Twilight sedation is always used alongside local anesthetic, so you will feel no pain during your procedure. The sedation handles anxiety and awareness, while the local anesthetic ensures the treatment area is fully numb. This two-layer approach means your body and your mind are both completely at ease.
There are two non-negotiable requirements before a sedated appointment:
  • Fast for 6 to 8 hours before your appointment — no food or drink, including water
  • Arrange a responsible adult to drive you to and from the office

Our team will give you a full pre-op instruction sheet at your consultation. If you have any questions before your appointment, call or text (818) 766-3775.
Not at this time. Twilight sedation at Toluca Advanced Dentistry is offered exclusively for oral surgery procedures. If you have dental anxiety around other treatments, we understand — please call or text us at (818) 766-3775 and our team will discuss what comfort options may be available for your specific needs.
Most patients feel alert enough to leave the office within 30 to 60 minutes after their procedure ends. However, grogginess can linger for the rest of the day. You should plan to:
  • Rest at home for the remainder of the day
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours
  • Avoid making important decisions until fully alert
