Your oral health is not a separate chapter in your medical story. It is woven into every page. Here is why the team at Toluca Advanced Dentistry partners with you on your whole-body wellness, not just your smile.
Think of your gums as a barrier. When they are healthy, they form a tight seal around each tooth, keeping bacteria in the mouth where they belong. When gum disease (periodontitis) sets in, that seal breaks down. Bacteria and the inflammatory chemicals they trigger can enter your bloodstream through the gum tissue every time you chew or brush.
Once in circulation, that inflammatory load does not simply disappear. It can travel to your heart arteries, interfere with how your cells respond to insulin, and affect the delicate environment of a growing pregnancy. This is why, at Toluca Advanced Dentistry on Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood, a routine periodontal exam is never just about your teeth. It is a window into your overall health.

The mechanism is not fully mysterious. When gum tissue is chronically infected, the body mounts a persistent immune response. That systemic inflammatory state is the same environment that encourages arterial plaque formation and can make existing plaques more likely to rupture. It is not that gum disease directly causes a heart attack, but chronic inflammation is a known driver of cardiovascular events, and periodontitis is a significant, often silent, source of that inflammation.
Specific bacteria associated with gum disease, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus sanguis, have been identified inside coronary artery plaques. These microbes can promote clot formation and trigger inflammatory responses in the vessel walls.
High blood glucose creates an environment in which bacteria thrive. The same elevated sugar levels that cause complications in the kidneys, eyes, and nerves also affect gum tissue, reducing blood supply and impairing the immune cells that normally keep oral bacteria in check. The result is that diabetic patients are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop periodontitis than people without the condition.
The cycle then reverses. Once gum infection takes hold, the inflammatory signals it produces interfere with insulin receptor function throughout the body. Cells become less responsive to insulin, pushing blood sugar higher. A patient who has been managing their A1c steadily may notice their numbers creeping up at exactly the same time their gums begin bleeding.
This is why we ask every new patient about their medical history and why patients from Studio City, Burbank, and across North Hollywood who are managing diabetes are encouraged to schedule periodontal evaluations regularly, often more frequently than the standard twice-a-year cleaning.
Elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy increase blood flow to gum tissue, making it more sensitive and prone to inflammation in response to the bacteria in plaque. Up to 70% of pregnant people experience some degree of pregnancy gingivitis. What often starts as pink-tinged water when you rinse can progress into a full periodontal infection if not addressed.
The concern goes beyond the mouth. When periodontal bacteria and their inflammatory byproducts reach the bloodstream, they can cross the placental barrier. Prostaglandin, a compound associated with gum infection, is also one of the chemicals that triggers labor. Elevated prostaglandin levels from oral infection have been linked to an increased rate of preterm delivery in some studies.
Many of our patients at Toluca Advanced Dentistry come to us as their first healthcare touchpoint. Patients who make the drive from West Hollywood, swing by after work from Burbank, or live just around the corner in Toluca Lake often see us more consistently than they see their primary care physician. That continuity matters.
Here are some of the systemic health clues that show up routinely in the dental chair:
